Have you ever made an appointment with someone online and, when you meet them in person, find that they're almost unrecognizable? During the past few years, many people increased theirĀ online presence, with social media, Zoom, LinkedIn, personal websites, and more becoming crucial ways to connect and work or socialize remotely. Of course, most of these platforms have the option to include a profile photo. When is the last time you updated yours?Ā Ā
āThe headshot is a hello. Itās a first impression, and, whether we like it or not, we live in a visual world,ā says Craig Toron of Toron Photography. Over the past year, it was common to hear stories about people who gained weight, lost weight, orĀ stopped dying their hair. Now that many people are back in the office, there may be a discrepancy between how we look in person and the photos we use to represent ourselves online.Ā First impressions matter, but how big a deal is it if we look different in person than in our digital image?
Peggy Loo, a psychologist at Manhattan Therapy Collective, says, āThere's always a moment of recalibration when we've first seen someone's picture and then we meet them in real life. It may be less of an āifā it happens and more of āhow muchā internal adjustment happens. For example, meeting someone on a first date who is more attractive in person than their profile is a pleasant surprise. Whereas meeting a physician who appears far younger than they do in their photo may give you pause about the amount of experience they have.ā
Photos give us a general idea of how someone appears, but there are many characteristics that a two-dimensional picture cannot provide. āThis is especially true with regard to height and stature, which is impossible to tell through a photo,ā Loo says. āFrom a clinician's standpoint, there were therapy patients who I had yet to meet in person because we started meeting in 2020 via teletherapy. Until this year I'd only seen them from the shoulders up! I met patients who were far taller or shorter than I imagined, and discovering those details did require me to amend my overall picture of who they were. It also gave me insight into how they are perceived by others (e.g., a petite woman showing up for an interview will elicit different impressions than one who is very tall). As a cognitive-behavioral psychologist, one of the areas of growth I'm always encouraging is cognitive flexibility, or the ability to shift your perspective or how you think. I think the level and speed at which you ārecoverā when modifying initial impressions can depend on how cognitively flexible you are.ā
Unfortunately,Ā some people will make assumptions about you based on a photo, and those impressions paint a picture of how we perceive someone. āThe first thing people encounter is the deltaā between how you represent yourself in a photo and how you look in person, Marion Dino, a retired human resources executive and career coach explains. āYou want to convey that you are trustworthy. Most people arenāt intentionally judging, but we all have unconscious biases, and you leave yourself open to the interpretation of being less than honest if you donāt represent yourself accurately.ā Most of the time, a rĆ©sumĆ© doesnāt include a profile photo, but ārecruiters do look at LinkedIn and other social media platforms,ā Dino says. āYou donāt want to leave the impression that you arenāt authentic.ā
Given this information, it may seem simpler to not include a profile photo at all, especially if you are concerned about discrimination. However, lack of a photo can be problematic as well.Ā Fake profiles on virtually every platform are common, and without all of the fields populated, especially the photo section, accounts thatĀ seem incomplete appear less trustworthy. A viewer may wonder what you are trying to hide, and it can be āeasier to dismiss someone and find a reason not to pursue them as a candidate,ā says Dino, rather than do more digging to confirm they are a good fit for a position.

Recently, Toron has been receiving a lot of calls from people who need a refreshed headshot because their appearance has changed during the pandemic. Even though heās been busy helping people with that, most people are still reluctant to update their photos. āThere are executives who post the same headshot for 14 years,ā Toron says. āThey would rather hold on to younger pictures of themselves than show a receding hairline or wrinkles.ā It may seem like older people would be more hesitant to take and use new photos, but Toron says that the same is true for his younger clients. āThey want to look more mature. They want to be perceived as having wisdom,ā he says.Ā
If you are due for a refresh and donāt want to spend the time or money for professional headshots,Ā here are some tips for taking a great new photo at home. āWear a solid color and keep the background basic,ā Toron says. āDress professionally. You donāt need to wear a suit and tie. A button-down shirt or blouse is fine, just make sure itās not something dated.ā Make sure you have enough light on your face. Natural light from a window is a great tool. Position yourself close to the window, facing it. This will give you soft, even lighting without harsh shadows. Use a tripod instead of holding the phone for a selfie so you get a proper angle, and take photos in bursts, so you have a few to choose from. āConfidence comes from the jawline that you extend,ā Toron says. āProper positioning and posing is timeless and can help a photo last for years. Viewers should be able to focus on the face of the individual and not be distracted. The first thing the person sees are the eyes and then the smile, the brightest parts of the picture.ā
And how often should you update your photos, so they donāt give someone pause when you meet in person? āProfile pictures should be updated every three years unless there is a significant change in appearance. Then, they should be taken sooner.ā So, the next time you scroll LinkedIn, log in to a Zoom meeting, or even send an email with a thumbnail profile photo, think about how you want to be perceived, and donāt hesitate to use a picture that fully represents who you are.
